the thorn birds

thornbirds

this is the first novel that i have ever read.

i made it as my book report when i was in my sophomore high.  my literature teacher was surprised when i showed her the book.  as she browsed the pages, she told me that it was a book for adults and i was too young for such kind – for the rest of my classmates were mostly reading hardbound ‘hardy boys mystery series’.

“the thorn birds” is the towering saga of three generations of a remarkable family in the rugged australian outback.  the triumphs and tragedies, the dramas and disappointments, the passions and the pain of the cleary family and those who came into their lives.

as a 14-year-old, this book opened a lot of revelations to me.  ironically, i was studying then in an exclusive for boys catholic school and i was reading a book about a girl who falls in love with a priest.  anyways, i did not changed the book that i chose for my report – that is how stubborn i was during my adolescent years.  my teacher gave me a passing grade of 75%.

  1. I first watched the movie The Thorn Birds on TV. I became addicted to it big time and started collecting everything that I could find that had to do with the movie. I also ordered the book and read it very quickly. I have started a group for anyone to join that loves the movie and or the book. http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Thorn_Birds/

I’ve read about the musical in the UK. Personally, even if I lived there I wouldn’t go and see it. There is no way that it can come even close to the movie. No one but Richard Chamberlain can play Father Ralph and get the same effect.

I own over 30 Thorn Birds books. Each has a different cover and some are in different translations. I’ve also got over 200 photos from the movie along with several other items.

      • I’ve also got a music box that plays Meggie’s theme. A roll for a player piano that is Meggie’s theme. I have numerous magazine clippings. I also have a frame around my license plate on my car that says “I’d much rather be watching The Thorn Birds”. I have photos of some of the books that I own on my group. I’ve found some more that I’d like to have but not sure if I’m going to buy them or not. I also have The Thorn Birds Press Book. I won that in the last 4 seconds of the auction by less then a dime. I’m always searching to see what else I can find.
