” . . . it’s a propriety strategy, i  can’t go into it in great detail.”

the thorn birds

thornbirds

this is the first novel that i have ever read.

i made it as my book report when i was in my sophomore high.  my literature teacher was surprised when i showed her the book.  as she browsed the pages, she told me that it was a book for adults and i was too young for such kind – for the rest of my classmates were mostly reading hardbound ‘hardy boys mystery series’.

“the thorn birds” is the towering saga of three generations of a remarkable family in the rugged australian outback.  the triumphs and tragedies, the dramas and disappointments, the passions and the pain of the cleary family and those who came into their lives.

as a 14-year-old, this book opened a lot of revelations to me.  ironically, i was studying then in an exclusive for boys catholic school and i was reading a book about a girl who falls in love with a priest.  anyways, i did not changed the book that i chose for my report – that is how stubborn i was during my adolescent years.  my teacher gave me a passing grade of 75%.

korean suicide

suicide-by-cbd

six in every 10 south korean teenagers have thought about taking their own lives at least once . . .

according to statistics, there were 12,174 suicides representing 5% of all deaths in 2007.  it’s also said that an annual average 23.6 koreans committed suicide out of 100,000 people in the last five years, which is one of the highest levels in the world.

i have read on the web of ‘copycat suicides’ becoming a common thing among young south korean actors and actresses.  they say in korea, there exists a high mental and emotional pressure that roots out from their society itself.  depression in fact is a primary factor which triggers them to end their own lives.

suffocation

suicide affects everyone, directly or indirectly without regards to one’s own culture, social status, education, race nor religion.  suicide is a form of a permanent escape – an irreversible solution, an act of cowardice and a waste of human life.
